Dark spots, acne scars, and hyperpigmentation are skin issues that often make us feel less confident. The causes can range from sun exposure, hormonal changes, inflammation, to aging. Fortunately, there are various active ingredients scientifically proven to fade dark spots and even out skin tone. Here is the complete explanation.

1. Alpha Arbutin
A brightening agent that works by inhibiting the tyrosinase enzyme, which is the enzyme that triggers melanin (skin pigment) formation. Its advantage is that it is effective for treating spots caused by sun exposure and acne scars. It does not dry out the skin and is safe for sensitive skin. Ideal concentration: 1–2%.

2. Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid dan Turunannya)
Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid and its Derivatives) is one of the most popular brightening ingredients because it works in two areas: inhibiting melanin production and providing an antioxidant effect that makes the skin glowing. More stable and gentler Vitamin C derivatives include Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, and *$3-O-ethyl Ascorbic Acid. Its main benefits are reducing dark spots, evening out skin tone, brightening, and making the face look fresh. Ideal concentration: 10–15% for beginners.

3. Niacinamide
Works by inhibiting the transfer of melanin from the deeper layers to the skin's surface. The benefits of this ingredient are reducing dull facial skin, evening out skin tone, strengthening the skin barrier, and reducing redness. Ideal concentration: 2–5%.

4. Tranexamic Acid
This ingredient is one of the best for melasma, deep spots, and stubborn dark spots. It works by inhibiting the inflammatory pathway that causes excessive melanin production. The advantage of Tranexamic Acid is that it is effective yet gentle and safe for sensitive skin. Concentration: 2–5%.

5. Retinol / Retinoid
Helps to accelerate skin cell regeneration, allowing cells containing melanin (dark spots) to be quickly replaced. Its benefits are fading spots faster, improving skin texture, and reducing fine lines. Ideal concentration: 0.2–0.5% for beginners. Oh yes, make sure to use sunscreen in the morning if you use retinol.

6. Azelaic Acid
Works as an anti-inflammatory + tyrosinase inhibitor, making it effective for post-acne spots and redness. Its advantages are that it is safe for sensitive skin, helps control acne, brightens, and soothes simultaneously. Concentration: 10–20%.

7. AHA (Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid)
Works as an exfoliant that lifts dead skin cells, making the skin look brighter and dark spots fade faster. The benefits of this ingredient are lifting dead skin cells, aiding in the absorption of brightening serums, and evening out skin texture. Ideal concentration: 5–10%.

8. Kojic Acid
A fermentation product and known as one of the powerful brighteners. This substance has the benefit of quickly reducing melanin and is effective for stubborn spots. This ingredient will work more effectively in cream form compared to a toner.

9. Licorice Extract
Contains glabridin which is capable of inhibiting melanin formation, yet is very gentle on the skin. Its benefits are brightening gradually, reducing redness, and being safe for sensitive skin.

10. Hydroquinone
It must be remembered that this ingredient must be under a doctor's supervision. Hydroquinone is the gold standard for treating severe melasma, but it carries a risk of irritation if not used correctly. Use only with a doctor's prescription, and not for long-term use. For more clarity, consult a dermatologist.

WRAP-UP!
Of all the brightening ingredients above, make sure to wear sunscreen with SPF 30-50 every day on your face if you are active outdoors. Because without wearing sunscreen, all the brightening ingredients above will not work optimally. Without UV protection, spots will reappear and even become darker.
