A Glance of Jakarta New City Development History

There are rows of tall buildings in the Sudirman – Thamrin area we go through these days. Main streets connect each of the districts together. President Soekarno was the one who brought Indonesia to independence, as he was also the pioneer of this new city of Jakarta’s development so that we can still enjoy it to this day.

It was also because of him that Lapangan Merdeka and the residential area in Kebayoran are connected with the main streets. He also planned the Sudirman – Thamrin to be a high-rise buildings area, which remains as it is until now.

An architect himself, President Soekarno established many iconic building projects like Monas (Monumen Nasional-National Monument), the Great Istiqlal Mosque, Hotel Indonesia, and Wisma Nusantara. He was also the man behind the establishment of an Olympic-standard facility in its time: the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.

While the Senayan area and Semanggi bridges were built especially for the 4th Asian Games in 1962. These days, this area is the busiest all over Jakarta. It’s undeniable that this area connects all areas in Jakarta and is occupied a lot, often as a traffic jam spot.
