PT Jasa Marga (Persero) Tbk. is a State-owned enterprise that has main function to plan, build, operate, and maintain highway and infrastructure so highway can be used as a freeway and can give more advantage to people than a non-highway road.
Founded in 1st March 1978, this company is the one and only highway promoter in Indonesia which the development is funded by the government based on the Government Regulation No. 04 of 1978.
At their first establishment, Jasa Marga was not only the operator but also had responsibility as the highway authority official in Indonesia. Their first work was Jagorawi (Jakarta-Bogor-Ciawi) highway that is known as the history maker of Jasa Marga and the development of highway industry in Indonesia which been operated since 1978.
In the end of 80s decade, the government started to collaborate with independent parties to participate in the highway construction through the mechanism of Build, Operate, and Transfer (BOT).
In 1990s, Jasa Marga was much functioned as the authority agency who facilitated independent investors that mostly failed to finish their projects, such as JORR and Cipularang project.
With the issuance of Act No. 38 of 2004 and Government Regulation No. 15, there were changes of the highway business mechanism which affected Jasa Marga.
Now Jasa Marga runs their function as the developer company and highway operator that will get full license from the government. The increasing of cars sold and the conducive policy for highway promoter authority makes Jasa Marga stronger in this highway industry in Indonesia from time to time.
