EV Parking Etiquette: Avoiding the "ICE-ing" Phenomenon for a Seamless Electric Ecosystem

New Challenges in Public Spaces
As the population of electric vehicles (EVs) on Indonesian roads continues to surge, a new challenge has emerged in public spaces concerning the ethical use of shared facilities: charging stations. The transition toward clean energy is not merely about swapping internal combustion engines for batteries; it is about adopting a new, more collective set of behaviors.

The most significant challenge currently is the phenomenon known as "ICE-ing"—a global term used when Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles park in spots specifically designated for EV charging. This often becomes a major bottleneck for the flow of eco-friendly mobility, particularly in shopping malls or office complexes where parking space is at a premium. However, this etiquette is not only directed at conventional car users; it applies just as strictly among fellow EV owners.

Charging Stations Are Not Priority Parking
Technically, Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPKLU) are functional utilities, not simply "VIP" or priority parking spaces. One of the most common misconceptions among EV owners is viewing a charging bay as a long-term parking spot.

Efficient use means providing opportunities for other users who may have critical battery levels (range anxiety). In major cities, the awareness to move a vehicle immediately after receiving a "full charge" notification has become the new standard of sophisticated behavior. This requires high self-discipline and a sense of social responsibility to ensure that the supporting infrastructure—which is still in its developmental phase—can be optimally utilized by the wider community.

Minimizing Conflict Through Education and Design
Strict enforcement of rules and continuous education are key to minimizing conflicts in parking areas. In 2026, we are beginning to see more intuitive charging bay designs, featuring highly visible road markings and accurate digital notification systems integrated into mobile apps. These systems are instrumental in managing the flow of vehicle entry and exit automatically.

However, technology is only a tool. The maturity of society in adapting to new technology remains the deciding factor. EV parking etiquette reflects our social maturity: do we care about the needs of others, or are we solely focused on our personal convenience? By mutually maintaining the accessibility of charging facilities, we not only accelerate the transition toward clean energy but also create a road ecosystem that is more orderly, efficient, and filled with respect.

The New Standard of Civilized Mobility
Understanding EV parking etiquette is a crucial part of building a transportation culture that values mutual respect. In the future, the quality of a driver will no longer be judged solely by the price of the vehicle they drive, but by their contribution to maintaining public order.

Every minute we spend parked in a charging slot when our battery is already full is a minute stolen from another user who might be in an emergency. This awareness is the true foundation of a Smart City—where humans and technology coexist in ethical harmony.

WRAP-UP!
The success of the EV ecosystem heavily relies on collaboration between road users. Avoiding ICE-ing and not overstaying at charging stations are small steps with a massive impact on collective comfort. Always enable your charging app notifications. Move your car as soon as it reaches 80%–90% (as charging speeds drop significantly after this point) to respect the time of other users.
