The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy / Tourism and Creative Economy Agency (Kemenparekraf / Baparekraf) encourage startup ecosystems in Indonesia by launching Baparekraf for Startup (BEKUP) program in an effort to develop local startups so that they have high competitiveness.

Reporting from the written statement of Kemenparekraf, Plt. Deputy Minister of Digital Economy and Creative Products of Kemenparekraf, Josua Simanjuntak, explained, through the BEKUP program, Kemenparekraf wanted to open up great opportunities for business people, and encourage the creation of digital innovation and adaptability of local startups to improve the quality of entrepreneurs.

"Through digital technology, we hope that there will be business acceleration that makes the tourism sector and the creative economy (parekraf) recover faster. In addition, with the opportunities offered by this program, businesses are expected to be able to focus and innovate to become solutions in tackling the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, "Josua said during the Kick Off Road To Baparekraf For Startup 2020 Webinar in Jakarta, Tuesday (7/7).

Josua added, Indonesia currently has some of the best startups. Reflecting on the huge economic impact of those startups, the government wants to grow other startups and replicate existing unicorn and decacorn startups.

"Don't let Indonesia only become a market, Indonesia's population is also big. Even though our internet penetration is low at 64 percent, the number of internet users is the largest in Southeast Asia at 175 million," he said.

For additional information, BEKUP program has been running for four years since 2016. So far, there have been 390 pre-startups in 15 cities throughout Indonesia facilitated by BEKUP. In its fifth year, BEKUP invites startups to jointly restore the creative economy and tourism in Indonesia through their business ideas and innovations.
