Solastalgia: Navigating the Yearning for Home Amidst Urban Landscape Changes

Standing on a familiar street corner and suddenly feeling like a stranger is an indication of a phenomenon called Solastalgia. Coined by environmental philosopher Glenn Albrecht, this term defines a form of existential and emotional distress experienced when one's home environment undergoes drastic negative changes. In major cities that are constantly transformed through massive development projects, aggressive gentrification, and climate change, solastalgia has become a valid psychological response to the loss of collective memory and the disconnection between individuals and their physical space.

In the context of urban anthropology, solastalgia arises from the human inability to adapt to the speed of physical environmental changes. Personal identity is often tied to specific "memory anchors"—such as old parks, historic buildings, or iconic rows of trees. When these anchors are replaced by generic concrete structures, an identity disconnection occurs, leading to a loss of intuitive security. An environment that should be a sanctuary can instead become a source of anxiety. This sense of loss is systemic and has a tangible impact on communal stress levels and the decline of social cohesion in urban settlements.

Psychologically, solastalgia erodes the sense of place. Humans biologically require environmental stability to feel "rooted," yet in an era of rapid development, this stability is challenged. Gentrification, for example, does not only change property economics but also erases layers of social history. The replacement of local businesses by international retail franchises or the conversion of public open spaces into private complexes creates a feeling of alienation. This is the essence of solastalgia: a deep longing for a "home" that still exists geographically but has vanished emotionally and spiritually.

Recognizing the phenomenon of solastalgia can serve as a catalyst for a more humanistic urbanism movement. A development paradigm is needed that goes beyond pursuing economic growth to respect the human psychological need for memory continuity. Future city planners are beginning to consider the "narrative health" of an environment, creating spaces that allow communities to maintain their emotional connections and letting history continue to tell its story amidst modernity.

Documenting city memories through art, literature, and digital archives is an effective way to mitigate the impacts of solastalgia. By retelling the history of spaces, new generations are given the opportunity to understand their roots. Furthermore, active citizen involvement in development decision-making is key to maintaining a sense of ownership. An ideal city is one capable of providing a consistent sense of "coming home," where progress does not necessitate the erasure of past traces that are precious to the human soul.

"Building a city is not just about assembling bricks and steel, but about nurturing spaces where memory and identity can remain calmly rooted amidst the tides of change."
