The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the world sports cycling governing body has praised Indonesia for completing two outstanding cycling venues, the BMX stadium in Pulomas and the Velodrome in Rawamangun, both in East Jakarta. Both venues alrerady used for the first time in an international sporting event at the 2018 Asian Games.
UCI President, David Lappartient showed his admiration when visiting both venues by calling them “world class” and “one of the best in Asia”. The BMX and Velodrome venues have reportedly achieved the top “Class 1” certification from the UCI.
Before it was inaugurated on August 15, 2018 by Jakarta’s Governor, Anies Baswedan, The place used to be an outdoor sport venue, which in 2016 was revamped into an indoor one meeting international standards.
The velodrome has a 250-meter-long circular track with a 40-degree incline, as per international standard, and can seat up to 1,000 people. The dome has quite strong notable ethnic Betawi ornamentation on the ceiling. To ensure continual use, the velodrome is also fitted with a multipurpose court in the center. The court can be used for basketball, volleyball, futsal, badminton and even exhibitions.
The Jakarta International Velodrome will be available for commercial use as the 2018 Asian Games have ended. The velodrome was designed not only for cycling track. It can be used for other activities besides sporting events.
